Larry Wood pens the Purple Passion®, a now iconic Hot Wheels Originals design modeled after a ’49 Mercury. Collectors raced to stores to purchase it, making it an almost instant hit.

1991

Hot Wheels creates its one billionth car, and to commemorate this milestone, the brand unveils its “Billionth Car Collection” with four-different Chrome-plated die-cast gold Corvettes®.

Hot Wheels introduces “Treasure Hunts.”  This limited production run of select vehicles with Spectraflame™ paint jobs and modified decos are randomly packed into cases with a green bar on the blister card marked “Treasure Hunt.” 

“Treasure Hunt” cars prove to be exceptionally popular and collectors quickly learn to befriend the store stock specialists so they can scoop them up before they hit the shelves.

1997

Hot Wheels brings “Legends to Life” by partnering with NASCAR drivers Kyle Petty and Jack Baldwin, putting NASCAR-themed vehicles into production for the first time.
